The African-American History Monument was dedicated to African-American history in Columbia. Carved by Ed Dwight, a sculptor from Denver, the monument represents different eras, beginning with the Middle Passage (the forcible migration of Africans to the New World as slaves).
The Catedral Primada, located on the famous Plaza de Bolivar, is the city’s largest church and the debated location of the first Catholic mass in Bogota. The tomb of Bogota’s founder, Jiménez de Quesada, is found in one of the cathedral’s chapels.
Buildings considered to be monuments are found on or near the Plaza de Bolivar in the center of the city. The Palace of Justice, home of Colombia’s Supreme Court, stands with the neoclassical National Capitol, home of Colombia’s congress on Bolivar Plaza. The Palace of San Carlos is the home and monument to its one-time inhabitant, Simon Bolivar.

It is ranked as the second in South America, but truly they have their own charm and can be a very exciting and memorable experience. The weather in Barranquilla is hot and humid (29ºC and 65% of relative humidity), with no much variation along the year. However, northern winds cool the city in a period between December and February, making weather more comfortable. Barranquilla has many beautiful beaches, and landscapes. The city is home to one of the most important folk and cultural festivals of Colombia, the Carnival of Barranquilla, which was declared a National Cultural Heritage by the Congress of Colombia in 2001 and recognized by UNESCO in 2003.A quick walk from the Catedral Metropolitan is another important landmark, Casa del Carnaval, where dancers and musicians go over the start of the celebration. It’s a Republican building from 1929 situated at the edge of the traditional and Carnival neighborhoods’ Abajo and Montecristo, donated by the family of a businessmen and patrons of the Carnival, Caridi. Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport was built in Barranquilla in 1919, becoming the first airport in South America. The first mention of the territory now occupied by Barranquilla dates back to 1533 and was written by Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés. It describes the travel of Pedro de Heredia, founder of Cartagena, only weeks before founding the city, who affirms that this point was a berth for the canoes of indios of the Government of Santa Marta. He mentions two canoes full of dried shrimps which they carried as merchandise to sell along the Magdalena River, together with salt and other things.

Medellin is a modern and vibrant city and yet remains true to its regional characteristics with its beautiful and stunning natural scenery. The city of Medellin is Colombia’s second largest city and said to be one of the most beautiful cities in all of South America. its climate is not as hot as other cities located at the same latitude near the equator. And due to its altitude above sea level as well as a privileged location in the Andes Range, Medellin’s weather is more characteristic of a humid subtropical climate rather than that of a tropical climate. Parquet Botero and its sculptures is probably one of the most famous attractions within Medellin (the info here at the hostel calls them “infamous” but unless I’m missing something, this is just a misinterpretation). The figures are bronze and what you might call bottom-heavy. That is the animals, the people; they all have small heads and narrow shoulders but blow out from the bottom down. I also checked out the Botanic Gardens though after living in Sydney and enjoying what our own Botanic Gardens back home have to offer, I wasn’t incredibly impressed. They do however, have a draw card that you wouldn’t find back home: South American wildlife such as woodpeckers and iguan. Good cuisine and nightlife aside, there’s n denying that Medellin is a troubled city where violence is commonplace. In the downtown streets you pass naked children trembling in the gutter, semi conscious after sniffing too much glue. La Festival de Flores [SSS], one of the most unique festivals in the world, when the compassions from Antioquia come to the city to display their flower designs. The weeklong celebrations feature a number of events, including an antique car parade, horse parade, and the grand finale, the flower float parade, where young and old alike display their flower designs in a 3- or 4-hour parade, also featuring dancers, singers, and performers. Be sure to book your plane ticket far in advance if you’ll be in Medellin during this time. If you’re interested in riding Medellin’s cable-car system, take the Metro to the Acevedo station, from which you can board the cable car.
