Buga formally Guadalajara de Buga is a medium sized city and municipality in the Valle del Cauca department of Colombia. It is famous for its Basilica del Señor de los Milagros, which houses an image of Christ called El Señor de los Milagros.Personal safety in the Valle del Cauca Department is a major priority, especially in the rural areas near the cities of Pradera, Florida, and Palmira. Back in the days in the foothills and nearby mountains contain dangerous rebels, namely FARC, who have been for decades been notorious for killings and kidnappings throughout the country. Always travel with a trusted native Colombia when traveling anywhere in the Department. Also stay on main highways, especially during the night. Never travel alone. On both sides of the walkway that leads to the cathedral are shops and markets offering, almost exclusively, religious trinkets. There are also many restaurants within the environs of the cathedral.
Aswell as Basílica del Señor de los Milagros there also another couple of churches of note not far away. The first, Iglesia San Francisco, is situated on carrera 14 a block from the cathedral. Also of some interest is Catedral de San Pedro Apóstol, found about a block further on the corner of Parque Cabal. Buses leave Cali for Buga very frequently and cost about $10,000. Try to take buses that go directly to Buga rather than those that take a detour through Palmerias
