Manizales is a city and municipality in central Colombia, capital of Department of Caldas and part of the region of Colombian Coffee-Growers Axis, near the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.Manizales was founded by a group of twenty Antioquians October 12, 1849, in the middle of a civil war. Even though it is the capital city of the department of Caldas and the most important city in the nation’s coffee region, Manizales is still physically a part of Antioquia, the region where Medellín reigns supreme. There is a strong Spanish influence in the city’s culture and, despite having a rather homogenous population, other races and ethnic groups migrated to the city to attend its outstanding universities. Tango or the rumba is the dance of choice here, and jazz is widely enjoyed here as well.The most important cultural events held are the International Festival of Theater City of Manizales, which is one of the major theater events in Latin-America, the Manizales Jazz Festival which gather Jazz Musicians from all over the world, it’s held annually.The Feria de Manizales (Manizales Fair) is the second biggest celebration in the country, after the Barranquilla Carnival.The city is also known as the home of the football club Once Caldas, the great winner of the 2004 Libertadores Cup, South America’s main club competition.Nightlife in Manizales is vibrant, especially Thursday through Sunday. There are many outdoor restaurants and coffee shops. These fill up with students from the seven universities scattered about the city. One can admire the typically beautiful colombianas.
